Crooked teeth can be hard to clean. They can also cause pain in some cases, not to mention the aesthetic concerns that can be raised by misaligned teeth. Braces are a traditional solution for misaligned, crooked, or crowded teeth, but patients also have more discreet options at their disposal. Clear aligners like Invisalign can gently tug youth teeth into a beautiful, comfortable, and perfectly aligned position. Here are some tips that will help you have a great experience with Invisalign.

1. Wear your clear aligners as directed.

Your orthodontist will give you usage directions after presenting you with your first set of clear aligners. They will show you how to put on and take off your clear aligners without damaging the plastic. Some clear aligners are designed with small protruding buttons that allow orthodontic rubber bands to be attached. These rubber bands can provide additional tension between your upper and lower teeth, which is helpful for correcting overbites and underbites. If your orthodontist tells you to use rubber bands during your treatment, make sure to do so. Following all of your dentist's directions will allow you to have the most effective and efficient treatment.

2. Take your clear aligners out before drinking coffee, tea, or wine.

When using Invisalign, you'll need to take your clear aligners out before eating. You can feel free to drink water while wearing your aligners, but you should always remove your aligners before drinking strongly pigmented beverages like coffee and wine. These drinks can discolor the clear plastic that makes up your Invisalign retainers, leading to unsightly staining. Remember to also rinse your mouth after drinking dark-colored beverages before putting your aligners back on.

3. Clean your clear aligners regularly.

Clear aligners should be cleaned regularly to keep them free of bacteria. Plaque can accumulate on clear aligners just as it can on your teeth. Fortunately, clear aligners can be easily cleaned with toothpaste and a soft toothbrush. You should clean your clear aligners at least twice a day when you normally brush your teeth. If desired, you can also soak your clear aligners in a sterilizing denture cleaning solution.

4. Wear your clear aligners as much as possible.

Clear aligners are removable for easy cleaning and eating during mealtimes. However, it's important that you wear your clear aligners whenever you're not engaging in these two activities. The more you wear your clear aligners, the more effective they will be.
